The Importance of Water

We're always being told to drink more water, but how many of us actually do?  However it may surprise you to know that over half of our body is composed entirely of water.  Lean muscle comprises a whopping 75% water. If we don't get enough, this can make it difficult for our body cells to function properly.  Even slight dehydration - the sort that occurs before we even start feeling thirsty - can result in headaches, dry skin, joint pain, constipation and so on.

How much is enough?

This varies from person to person, depending on our body weight, activity level, the temperature we are in and so on.  As a rough guide, we should be aiming at around two litres per day, more if we are active or it is a hot day.  Try to sip the water throughout the day, and avoid drinking too much with food.  Tea, coffee and fruit juices don't count I'm afraid - in fact tea and coffee actually increase our requirement for water.

Which water is best?

The quality of the water you drink each day makes a vital contribution to your health, fitness and life expectancy.

Environmental pollutants present water treatment plants with ever increasing problems. Each day, they try to remove up to 800 different residual chemicals, from oestrogen, to pesticides, industrial pollutants and so on.

It's no wonder many people are wary about drinking tap water.

If you buy mineral water, always choose one that says mineral water on the bottle - otherwise you could be ending up with ordinary tap water, expensively bottled.  Mineral waters vary hugely, both as regards to their mineral content (check the label to ensure your water is low in Sodium), as well as pH - alkaline waters are best (the higher the pH, the more alkaline a water is).

Personally I don't care for the environmental aspect of all those plastic bottles, so would recommend buying a water filter for your home - it will be far cheaper in the long run.
